Inside Comnet's Pre-Configured CNPE Series

Every outdoor network deployment starts with the same short list of problems: how do you power the device, how do you protect it from the environment, and how do you connect it back to the network. Historically, that meant sourcing an enclosure, a power supply, circuit breakers, surge protection, and cable management separately, then building the whole thing in-house before it ever reached the field.

The CNPE Series changes that. Comnet's pre-configured Electrical Enclosure Systems arrive as a single SKU, with the enclosure, power supply, breakers, surge suppression, and cable management already integrated and tested. No in-house design. No build time. Mount it, power it, connect it.

What's Inside a CNPE Enclosure

Every CNPE unit ships with the internal components required to power, protect, and connect an installed Comnet communications device. That includes:

  • Power - 12VDC or 55VDC configurations, sized to 200W or 500W depending on the enclosure, with overload, over-voltage, and over-temperature protection built in.

  • Protection - An IP68-rated, NEMA 6P and 4X polyester enclosure rated for -30°C to +70°C, with integrated AC/DC circuit breakers, a tamper switch on the door, and 10kA Ethernet surge suppression.

  • Connectivity - DIN-rail mounted fiber cable management to keep optical infrastructure organized and secure.

The CNSG2PB Dual Channel Hardened Ethernet Surge Suppression Device, supporting IEEE 802.3bt for up to 90W of PoE per port, is also available as a standalone add-on for systems that need additional copper port protection.

Why a Pre-Configured Enclosure Works Better in the Field

Skip the in-house build. Comnet designs, configures, and tests every enclosure before it ships. No custom integration work, no sourcing individual components, no waiting on a fabrication shop for a one-off design.

Deploy anywhere, pole or wall. The UV-resistant polyester enclosure is rated IP68 and NEMA 6P and 4X, with IK10 impact protection and a UL746C(f1) UV resistance rating. Built for harsh external electrical applications and tested to 1,344 hours of salt spray exposure, it holds up whether it's mounted on a pole or a wall, indoors or out.

Protect what's inside. Integrated AC and DC circuit breakers, 10kA Ethernet surge suppression, and a tamper switch on the enclosure door guard both the installed device and the technician who eventually has to open it in the field.

Power sized to the job. 12VDC and 55VDC power supply options in 200W and 500W configurations are matched to the wattage draw of the device installed inside, with additional local DC voltage available for auxiliary equipment if the site requires it.

Global approvals, no extra legwork. CNPE carries UL 508A industrial control listing, UL94 5VA flammability rating, and compliance with EN55032 and EN61000 series EMC standards, plus CCC/EAC/BSMI approvals for international deployments. Every unit is TAA and NDAA compliant, backed by a limited lifetime warranty on the enclosure and a 3-year limited warranty on the power supply.

Built for Any Small-Footprint Active Device

CNPE enclosures are engineered to house a single small-footprint active device, an industrial Ethernet switch or an industrial media converter, along with the cable management, surge protection, and power infrastructure that device needs to run reliably outdoors. Whether the installed device is a hardened Ethernet switch aggregating several connected endpoints or a hardened media converter bridging copper to fiber at a remote point, the enclosure does the same job: keep it powered, keep it protected, keep it connected. The choice of which device goes inside comes down to what the specific site needs. The enclosure itself doesn't change.

Where CNPE Fits in the Field

CNPE's combination of ruggedization and flexibility makes it the right fit anywhere a network device has to live outside the building envelope: security and surveillance poles, intelligent transportation system cabinets, substations and utility rights-of-way, and manufacturing sites with equipment spread across a large footprint. In each case, CNPE is the constant, a single pre-configured, Comnet-approved SKU that removes the enclosure build from the project timeline entirely.
